Bespoke Engagement Ring Pricing: Three Tiers Explained
Why Bespoke Engagement Ring Pricing Often Surprises People
We hear it almost every week: someone comes in with a photo saved from a luxury jewellery house's website — a classic solitaire-style engagement ring, perhaps with a lab-grown diamond — expecting a bespoke, hand-made version of it to cost roughly what the original did. It rarely does, and it's worth explaining why before you book a bespoke consultation.
A big brand's price covers a design that's already finished, tooled, and produced at scale across thousands of identical pieces. Bespoke engagement ring design starts from nothing: your own design, modelled from scratch, made by hand, by one maker, just for you. You're not paying for a logo — you're paying for original design time, hand-fabrication, and a piece that exists nowhere else. That's a genuinely different thing to price, and it's almost always more, not less, than the equivalent mass-produced piece.
To make that concrete, here's roughly what three different levels of bespoke engagement ring actually cost to make in the UK.
Classic Bespoke Engagement Ring — from £2,000–£2,500
For clients drawn to a slender, elegant band with a traditional setting — a four-claw or bezel setting, understated and minimal in metal, with a smaller centre diamond rather than a bold statement piece. The design itself stays close to this classic, refined silhouette, so there's less original design time involved than in the tiers below, while the ring is still entirely hand-made for you, in your own size and metal choice, rather than bought off a shelf.
This tier suits someone who knows the shape they want and is choosing bespoke mainly for the fit, the craftsmanship, and a lab-grown diamond — not for a fully original design.
Stylised Bespoke Engagement Ring — from £3,000
For a bolder, more distinctive engagement ring design — chunkier band profiles, sculptural settings, unusual stone shapes, or a silhouette that doesn't exist off the shelf anywhere. This is where the CAD (computer-aided design) process becomes a real part of the work: several rounds of 3D modelling and revision before anything is made, so the finished ring is shaped specifically around your own taste rather than adapted from an existing style.
This tier suits someone with a clear sense that they want something more individual, even if the exact design isn't locked down yet — that's what the CAD stage is for.
Full Bespoke Engagement Ring — from £5,000
The complete experience: an engagement ring designed entirely around your own story, in full CAD, from a blank page — nothing adapted from an existing style. This includes a coordinating wedding band, designed alongside the engagement ring itself so the two sit together as one considered set, not matched up afterwards.
This tier suits a client who wants the design process itself — sketching, modelling, refining together — to be part of the ring's story, not just the finished object.
What Actually Goes Into Every Bespoke Commission
The best part of bespoke isn't really the price — it's that you end up with an engagement ring that exists nowhere else, designed and made specifically for you. But it's worth knowing what that actually involves, because it's where the cost comes from.
Every commission starts with a free design consultation: we talk through what you're picturing and your budget, and sketch out initial ideas together at no cost. From there, the design moves into CAD (computer-aided design), which typically takes around two weeks to get right. Once it's approved, we source and set the stones, create a mould and 3D print of the ring, then it goes through hallmarking, and finally finishing and polishing by hand. Every one of those stages is real time and real craftsmanship, not padding — it's what turns a drawing into a ring you'll wear for life.
What Moves the Final Price of a Bespoke Engagement Ring
Bespoke genuinely works as a sliding scale, not a fixed price — so if one of the figures above feels like a stretch, there's real room to bring it closer to your budget without giving up on a one-off piece:
- Metal — sterling silver, or gold at 9k, 14k or 18k, each a different price point
- Centre stone — a smaller carat, or a slightly lower clarity grade, can bring the cost down meaningfully without changing the overall look
- Stone choice — a different gemstone, or a lab-grown diamond, in place of a natural diamond
- Where the money goes — more into the band's structure and metal and less into the stone, or the other way round, depending on what matters most to you
None of this is about compromising the design. It's simply about choosing where your budget goes — and the best way to find that balance is a free bespoke consultation: bring your ideas and your budget, and we'll work out what fits.
