Every ring begins the same way: not with a catalogue, but with a conversation. As Brighton's independent bespoke jewellery, I design and handmade engagement rings entirely from scratch, no templates, no mass production, just your story, translated into solid gold.

A Story, Not Just a Ring

The Illustrated Jeweller was born from a true story: my great-great-grandfather Albert Self, a Royal Navy caulker lost at sea on Christmas Day 1885. That story of safe passage and homecoming runs through every piece I make the swallow, sailors' symbol of loyalty and return, appears throughout my work as a quiet thread connecting past to present.

THE BESPOKE PROCESS

Seven Weeks. One Story. Yours Forever.

1. Consultation
We talk through your ideas, budget, and the person the ring is for. No pressure, no obligation, just an honest conversation about what you're picturing.

2. Design & CAD
Your idea becomes a real design. I sketch initial concepts, then build a precise CAD (computer-aided design) model, so you can see and refine exactly how your ring will look before any metal is touched.



3. Gemstone Selection
Choose your stones together, diamonds or coloured gemstones. Every stone is selected for quality and character, not just certificate numbers.

4. Casting
Your design is cast in solid 9ct or 18ct gold. This is where the ring takes physical form for the first time, from digital model to solid metal.



5. Stone Setting
Each stone is set entirely by hand, secured with the precision that only comes from a fine eye and attention to detail, craft and skill.



6. Polishing
Every surface is hand-finished and polished until it catches the light exactly as it should, no shortcuts, no machine buffing alone.

7. Delivery
Seven weeks from confirmed design and deposit, your ring is ready. Occasionally rare stones extend this slightly, and I'll always keep you updated along the way.
